He holds a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Chile and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Cornell University. For more than three decades, he served as a researcher at the Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) in Chile, where he eventually became Director of the Microbial Genetic Resources Bank. He currently works as a consultant in several Latin American countries.
